Since it is officially the scariest time of the year, we’re jumping aboard the telly time-machine to look back at some of soapland’s creepiest storylines and most sinister characters from serial killers to white haired super-villains
Gail Platt has been wed more times than kids will say ‘trick or treat’ this Halloween and unfortunately, all of her marriages have either ended in divorce – or death! But Gail totally luckedout when she married financial advisor Richard Hillman, who turned out to be a serial killer!
Considered to be one of the most memorable soap villains of all time, Richard killed his business partner, Duggie Ferguson, murdered his ex-wife, Patricia Hillman and local beauty stylist Maxine Peacock. He also attacked pensioner Emily Bishop and tried to bump off Gail’s mum Audrey in a house fire! And yet he still managed to compose himself with a certain inimitable charm.
When Gail finally discovered the terrible truth she branded him ‘Norman Bates with a briefcase’ in a genius scene. Determined to cover his tracks, Richard later kidnapped the Platt family and drove them to their doom into the canal. Luckily, Gail, Sarah, David and Bethany survived and Richard was believed to have drowned. Yeah, we know Gail identified his body. But, hey, this is soapland. So, you never know…
Gavin haunts ‘dead’ Kathy – EastEnders
When the not-really-dead Kathy Beale returned to Albert Square a few years ago, she revealed she was on the run from her horrible husband, Gavin Sullivan. It had been Gavin’s idea for the couple to fake their deaths in a car crash in South Africa almost a decade earlier as part of an insurance scam.
EastEnders bosses warned the character of Gavin was going to be one of the most dangerous and manipulative villains ever. Indeed, during his time lurking around Walford, Gavin was behind the kidnapping and brutal beating of Kathy’s ex-husband, Phil Mitchell, and was responsible for his sister Margaret Midhurst’s fatal fall from a hotel balcony. On Halloween 2016, Gavin held the Mitchell family hostage and threatened to kill them all by lighting a load of fireworks. But not before dropping the shock bombshell he was Sharon Mitchell’s long-lost dad. ‘Hello, Princess!’
On paper he sounds pretty chilling – but the jury was always out on whether he could out sinister some of Walford’s more iconic bad ‘uns.
