A federal grand jury on Friday indicated 13 Russian nationals and three Russian entities for allegedly meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
Putin's efforts supply more potential reasons for obstruction of justice by the Trump Administration.
While it has taken awhile to completely develop the criminal charges, American intelligence agencies doubtless spotted the criminal activity of the Russians in the 2016 presidential election awhile back. Recall that even before the election date, American intelligence agencies had built a huge record of Russian interference.
It is not required for an obstruction of justice charge that the activity shielded be criminal activities by the obstruction offender himself. It has often been true that obstruction of justice has been committed to cover up something either criminal by someone else, or embarrassing rather than criminal by the obstruction offender.
Once Trump was elected, and certainly once he took office, it's possible that he would have been made aware of this ugly upcoming event: looming charges against some or all of the 13 Russians. Since Trump is in denial, not merely of his role in the Russian meddling, but of there even being Russian meddling at all, Trump was facing a prospect that was unwelcome to him.
It is one thing for him to have had a shared movement with Russia on the other side of the world. There were Russian hackers like “Fancy Bear” operating far away from America. It is another thing for him to have had a shared movement with Russian agents operating here in America itself. Look at it bluntly. The Russians used, according to the indictment, “election-related hashtags“ like ”#Trump2016,” “#TrumpTrain,” and the Twitter account “March for Trump” and Facebook account “Trumpstars United.”
The indictment further alleges that the Russians “used false U.S. persons to communicate” with ”members, volunteers, and supporters of the Trump Campaign . . . as well as grassroots groups that supported then-candidate Trump.”
