British people prepare to light Harvey Weinstein on fire

England celebrates Guy Fawkes Day this weekend, which is like their Fourth of July, or something. As part of the festivities, which include fireworks and bonfires, the Edenbridge Bonfire Society plans to burn a 36-foot-tall effigy of disgraced Hollywood sexual predator Harvey Weinstein.

The society builds a Fawkes-style dummy of a shame-worthy public figure to be roasted every November. Past winners include Donald Trump and Saddam Hussein. Organizers considered another politician this year, Prime Minister Theresa May — whose response to the Grenfell Tower fire would’ve made her own scorching particularly cathartic — but they said Weinstein was the “obvious option.”

A spokesperson for the event explains:

As with last year there were many strong contenders for this year’s celebrity guy, particularly in the political and cultural world.

However, Weinstein was the obvious option due to allegations of outrageous and despicable conduct, which we at Edenbridge Bonfire Society obviously found completely abhorrent.

While the burning of the guys is aimed as a light-hearted way to mark the traditional bonfire night celebrations in the UK, there is of course nothing funny about Weinstein’s behaviour, so it seemed only fair that he gets his comeuppance in effigy form.

London Police are currently investigating Weinstein for sexual assault against seven different victims between the late 1980s and 2015. Over 50 women have publicly alleged that Weinstein harassed or assaulted them, with new accusations still rolling in nearly four weeks after The New York Times first broke the story.

More than 10,000 people are expected to attend Weinstein’s ceremonial conflagration on Saturday. You can view wonderful photos of some cool blokes preparing for the event below.
