Winx Melbourne Cup: Why can’t the Cox Plate champion race in the Melbourne Cup?

Australia’s beloved thoroughbred champion may be too good to race in the Melbourne Cup.
With a streak spanning 22 consecutive wins, Winx would hit with a massive weight, probably in the vicinity of 60kg, because of her international rating of 132.

Racing Victoria handicapper Greg Carpenter confirmed last week that Winx would demand a huge weight should connections ever wish to run her in the race that stops a nation.
Carpenter labelled Winx “the best in the world” and despite having never raced further than 2200m, she would still be given an unprecedented weight.

“For me she is the best horse in the world and her performances would demand that, to give other horses (in the Cup) a chance and an opportunity to be competitive, she would actually get at least 60 kilos in the Melbourne Cup,” he said.
Connections also would be hesitant to prepare her as a seven-year-old for a gruelling Melbourne Cup campaign next year at the risk of her breaking down with the extra demands on the training track.
