The Huskers (3-4, 2-2 Big Ten) are coming off a bye following a second consecutive lopsided home loss (first to Wisconsin, then to Ohio State). The Boilermakers (3-4, 1-3 Big Ten) fell to Rutgers last week and also are trying to snap a two-game conference losing streak.
After reviewing the film from Nebraska’s loss to Ohio State, defensive coordinator Bob Diaco still thinks his defense has the potential to be the best. As for the offense, the Huskers are officially without running back Tre Bryant, who had season-ending knee surgery this week. However, there is better injury news on the defense.

Nebraska-Purdue preview, keys to the game
When Nebraska and Purdue play Saturday, it will be only the sixth time the two have ever met. Of the five prior meetings between the programs, four came after the Huskers joined the Big Ten. In fact, Nebraska and Purdue have met every year since 2013, when both schools were placed in the Big Ten West Division. The Huskers have won three of those four meetings.
The one Purdue win between the two schools as members of the Big Ten came in 2015 in West Lafayette. Nebraska was without starting quarterback Tommy Armstrong, and backup quarterback Ryker Fyfe was left at the helm. He ultimately turned the ball over five times in the Huskers’ 55-45 loss.
The Huskers head to West Lafayette in hopes of avenging that loss. Nebraska currently has a 3-4 overall record, and a 2-2 mark in Big Ten play. The Huskers’ two Big Ten losses came to Ohio State and Wisconsin in back-to-back weeks before the bye. Nebraska is tied for second place in the West Division.
Purdue has improved significantly in 2017, and has performed well at home at Ross-Ade Stadium. While only 1-3 in the Big Ten, the Boilermakers are 3-4 overall. At home, Purdue is 2-1. The one home loss this season came to Michigan.
The Boilermakers have used both Elijah Sindelar and David Blough at quarterback in all seven games this season. The duo has combined for over 1,650 passing yards and 14 touchdowns, which is something defensive coordinator Bob Diaco is keeping an eye on.
“The two-quarterback system doesn’t seem to change the play selection,” Diaco said. “The way they operate with personnel, the way they operate with formation and the way they operate play selection. I don’t think they alter too much based on one person or the next. Tactically, there is not much of a difference.”
Purdue most recently lost to Rutgers, 14-12, on the road. Despite the loss, the Boilermakers outgained the Scarlet Knights 474 yards to 217 yards. That is likely one of the reasons Nebraska is the underdog at Purdue on Saturday. Another? Three out of Purdue’s four losses this season have come against teams nationally ranked at game time. Two of those losses were also by 8 or fewer points.
