CBJ Morning Buzz: Feds probing Wells Fargo activity; Possible Amazon HQ2 site; Dale Jr. test drives new career

In local news:
So the plot thickens — and we're not talking about this morning's bombshell from The New York Times that former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort has surrendered to the FBI. Troubles at Charlotte's largest financial-sector employer are also of note, as The Wall Street Journal reports federal prosecutors are investigating foreign-exchange trading at Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE: WFC) and have subpoenaed information from the bank. This comes on the heels of the firings of four bankers in that unit, which The Charlotte Observer has previously reported were tied to a single client transaction. Wells Fargo, of course, is no stranger to controversy lately — for over a year now, the bank has faced intense scrutiny over its automotive insurance programs as well as revelations that its high-pressure sales culture prompted employees to open bogus accounts.
In other news, the local daily has obtained emails that reveal developer Daniel Levine's enthusiasm for attracting the Amazon HQ2 project to land he owns on the northern end of uptown. The Queen City's pitch for that high-profile, high-dollar project has been submitted, with officials confirming 22 sites were included — but not which ones. However, a CBJ analysis of Amazon's (NASDAQ: AMZN) requirements for its second headquarters campus pegged Charlotte's North End as a possible site that could be in play.
The Observer also has a report on N.C. Attorney General Josh Stein's review of the merger deal between Carolinas HealthCare System and UNC Health Care.
